“Excelsior” from Ballads and Other Poems, 1842. Read by Charles Calhoun, Jane Wald, Steve Young, Erika Koss, and Cindy Hall Kouré. On February 27, 2008, Longfellow’s 201st birthday, five travelers from along the Old Post Road made themselves comfortable in oldest room of the Inn, which is where the Howe family’s tavern started in 1716. With the fire burning low and snow lightly falling outside, they enjoyed a late night of warm camaraderie and poetry, re-creating the ambiance of Longfellow’s Tales of a Wayside Inn. Charles Calhoun, Portland, ME • Jane Wald, Amherst, MA • Steve Young, Chicago, IL • Erika Koss, Washington, DC • Cindy Hall Kouré, Natick, MA |
